Nigeria’s National Grid Collapse: Current Transformer Explosion Blamed

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed that Saturday’s national grid collapse was caused by a current transformer explosion at the Jebba transmission station. This marks the third grid collapse in just one week, with power generation shutting down at 8:16 am.

Key Developments:

  • Transformer Explosion: Current transformer explosion at Jebba transmission station triggered the outage.
  • Power Restoration: Power significantly restored in 33 states and FCT by 1 pm.
  • Investigation: NERC to conduct public hearing to identify causes of recurring grid disturbances.
  • Previous Incidents: Grid tripped off on Monday and Tuesday during restoration.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that its engineers have successfully isolated the faulty transformer and reconfigured the busbar arrangement, restoring power supply. Power generation dropped from 3,042 megawatts at 8 am to 47MW by 9 am.

NERC expressed concern over escalating grid disturbances, emphasizing the need for an independent System Operator to enhance grid management and infrastructure investment
