Speaking at the News Agency of Nigeria’s international conference in Abuja, Mr. Idris acknowledged the Sahel region’s instability and its spillover effects on Nigeria due to porous borders.
Root Causes of Violence
Minister Idris cited socioeconomic marginalization, weak governance structures, environmental degradation, and organized crime as key factors contributing to the violence in the Sahel. He emphasized the need for collaboration between government agencies, international partners, and security experts to address these underlying issues.
Government’s Strategy
The Federal Government is strengthening joint military operations, such as the Multinational Joint Task Force, and supporting initiatives to stabilize the Sahel region. Domestically, security remains a top priority under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with investments in equipment, manpower, and intelligence gathering.
Call to Action
Idris urged experts to develop innovative solutions to tackle the challenges posed by violence in the Sahel. The conference brought together key national and international stakeholders, including former Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar and Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas.
