Nigeria Urges Global Action on Nuclear Disarmament at UN General Assembly

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Abubakar, addressed the 79th United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. He praised the UN’s leadership and reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the Non-Aligned Movement and the African Group.

Minister Abubakar stressed the urgent need for progress in nuclear disarmament, citing the significant threat nuclear weapons pose to international peace and humanity. He noted that nuclear weapons cannot be justified amidst pressing socio-economic development needs.

Key Points from Minister Abubakar’s Address:

  • Urgent Call to Action: Nuclear-Weapon States must fulfill their Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) obligations and work towards a nuclear-weapon-free world.
  • Humanitarian Consequences: Nuclear weapon use has devastating impacts on health, environment, and economic resources.
  • Support for TPNW: Nigeria commends nations that ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and encourages others to follow suit.
  • Peaceful Nuclear Energy: Nigeria commits to peaceful nuclear energy applications, praising the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its monitoring efforts.

Minister Badaru reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to eliminating nuclear weapons, stating, “While the path to disarmament is challenging, we must remain focused and resolute. Nigeria will continue to play its part in ensuring a safer world for future generations”.

Nigeria has consistently demonstrated its commitment to nuclear disarmament, having signed and ratified the TPNW in 2021. The country has also participated in international efforts to promote universal adherence to the treaty.

As the international community continues to navigate the complexities of nuclear disarmament, Nigeria’s call to action serves as a reminder of the urgent need for collective responsibility in ensuring a safer world.
