Nurses in Ondo State are urging the state government to review their salary structure to align with that of other healthcare professionals, warning of potential disharmony within the system.
Disparity with Doctors’ Salaries
At the 2024 Ondo Nurses Week/Scientific Conference, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) expressed concerns that doctors’ salaries were recently reviewed to match federal levels, leaving out other health workers, including nurses.
Nurses’ Crucial Role Highlighted
Akintobi Orobode, NANNM state chairman, emphasized nurses’ vital role in healthcare, noting they spend 24 hours with patients, making them vulnerable to attacks. He cautioned that preferential treatment could lead to tension and appealed for swift government action to prevent a healthcare crisis.
Government Response
In response, Special Adviser on Health Matters Prof. Simidele Odimayo assured that the government is reviewing the salary structure to align with federal standards. Commissioner for Health Dr. Banji Ajaka encouraged ongoing engagement and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to nurses’ welfare and teamwork within the healthcare system.
