US Boosts Nigeria Flood Relief Efforts with $6.5m Aid Package

The United States is providing $6.5m in aid to Nigeria to address the country’s flood-related humanitarian crisis, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The funding, part of USAID’s 2024 budget, will support local partners in responding to flooding and other disasters. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) will receive $3m to address flood-related needs across Nigeria.

Flooding has affected over 619,000 people in 29 states since mid-August, claiming 210 lives and displacing nearly 229,000 people. The US has already provided nearly $100m in humanitarian assistance to Nigeria in 2024.

“The US remains committed to supporting Nigeria in the face of climate change and natural disasters,” said USAID Mission Director Melissa Jones. “Our partnership is rooted in a long history of delivering humanitarian aid across the nation.”
