Five arrested over kidnapping of 20 Nigerian corps members in Imo State

Security forces in Nigeria have arrested five suspected members of an armed gang linked to the kidnapping of 20 prospective youth corps members on Independence Day.

A joint task force comprising personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), the military, and the police carried out intelligence-led operations across Rivers and Abia states between 10 and 14 October, security sources said.

Three other suspects escaped with gunshot wounds during the raids, prompting an ongoing manhunt across the south-eastern region.

The October 1 abduction

The 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were abducted on 1 October along the Owerri–Onitsha expressway in Imo State while traveling to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

Following a six-day joint security operation, all 20 victims were rescued unhurt on 7 October in Amakohia Ubi village.

Security sources described the latest arrests in Port Harcourt and Aba as a major breakthrough in dismantling the criminal network responsible for the attack.

“Security agencies have been on a sustained manhunt for the abductors,” a security official said. “We strongly believe those captured will face trial in court so that the victims get justice.”

The DSS and police are expected to charge the suspects upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
