A Member of Parliament from Ghana, Mr. Dominic Napare has called on ECOWAS member states to strengthen climate early-warning systems and ensure that critical weather data reaches countries and communities in time to prevent deaths and destruction.
Mr. Napare made the call during an interview at the Second Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament and Second Seminar, with the theme “Climate Change as a driver of environmental degradation population displacement and Rising Insecurity in the ECOWAS Region taking place in Accra, Ghana.
Mr. Napare said climate-related risks should no longer be treated as isolated environmental problems because of their impact on food security, poverty, health, agriculture, and human mobility.
Mr. Napare said governments needed to adopt a more coordinated approach to climate-related emergencies.
He said recent flooding across parts of West Africa demonstrated the need for stronger preparedness.
