Nigeria must overhaul its women’s football development structure and reinvest in grassroots talent following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, according to Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC).
Speaking on Friday, 21 August 2026, at the opening ceremony of the 2026 FCT FA Women’s Inter-Area Council Football Tournament in Abuja, Omidiran stated that the Super Falcons’ missed qualification should trigger immediate structural reforms across the sport.
Focus on Grassroots and Structural Reform
Omidiran, a former executive member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and two-time chair of its Women’s Football Committee, called for a long-term strategy rather than temporary fixes to restore the nation’s continental dominance.

Key points from her address include:
- Grassroots Reinvestment: She urged sports administrators to identify young female athletes early and to provide structured coaching, adequate facilities, and clear pathways to professional leagues.
- National Systemic Build: Emphasizing that Nigeria can no longer rely solely on past achievements, she called for a sustainable talent pipeline to feed national squads and professional clubs continuously.
- Appeal for Calm: Omidiran appealed to Nigerian fans to remain patient while football governing bodies deliberate on administrative and technical solutions.
- Empowerment Initiatives: Highlighting grassroots efforts like her 2024 “Girls Play Sports Initiative” and the current FCT tournament, she praised local organizers—including initiator Pat Ajuma Ayegba—for funding local competitions that build confidence and sporting skills in young women.
