Nigeria election: INEC extends candidate deadline after party appeals

Nigeria’s electoral body has extended the deadline for political parties to submit their candidate lists for the 2027 general elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) moved the cutoff from Saturday, 11 July, to midnight on Tuesday, 14 July 2026.

The shift follows an urgent appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), an umbrella body representing the country’s political parties. Many parties had reportedly struggled to upload the names and personal details of their presidential and parliamentary candidates onto the commission’s portal before the original weekend deadline.

In a statement, INEC National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna said the three-day extension was granted to ensure “inclusivity,” adding that the commission was acting strictly within legal boundaries.

The statement urged political parties to utilize the brief window to finalize their submissions, warning that no further delays will be tolerated ahead of the 2027 vote.
