Nigeria, UN pledge deeper ties on African trade and women’s leadership

Nigeria and the United Nations have reaffirmed their commitment to boosting economic integration, democratic governance, and women’s leadership across the continent.

The agreement follows a meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Director for Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa.

During the talks, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu congratulated Ms Eziakonwa on her recent promotion to UN Assistant Secretary-General, calling it a proud moment for Nigeria and wider Africa.

The discussions focused heavily on West African regional stability and the implementation of Nigeria’s foreign policy framework, which targets development, democracy, diaspora engagement, and demographic growth.

Driving continental trade

Ms Eziakonwa briefed the foreign minister on a recent regional dialogue hosted by Nigeria in partnership with the UNDP to fast-track the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The UN official praised Nigeria’s pivotal role in continental commerce, stating that the country’s leadership remains vital to making the free trade pact a success. She added that the UNDP is prepared to increase support for policies that strengthen African supply chains, digital innovation, and intra-continental trade.

Boosting women in governance

The UN delegation also extended an invitation to Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu to join the UNDP Regional Leadership Programme as a mentor for emerging female leaders. The initiative connects young African women with established figures in public service.

Additionally, Nigeria’s top diplomat was invited to headline a high-level summit in August 2026, aimed at increasing women’s representation in political leadership across Africa.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the UN initiatives, emphasizing that investing in youth and expanding women’s political participation are crucial to securing long-term peace and stability on the continent.
