Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassador to Qatar, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has formally assumed office after presenting his diplomatic credentials to the Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
The ceremony took place with full military honours at the Amiri Diwan, the seat of government in the capital, Doha, on Thursday. Following the presentation of the Letter of Credence, the Amir held a private audience with Prof. Yakubu to discuss bilateral ties.

During the talks, Sheikh Tamim reaffirmed the “longstanding and cordial relations” between the two nations, recalling previous high-level state visits and reiterating Doha’s commitment to boosting cooperation with West Africa’s largest economy. Prof Yakubu expressed his condolences to the Amir over a recent industrial accident at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City—a major hub for the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) production. He also emphasized Abuja’s desire to deepen partnerships with the Gulf state across key sectors, including trade, investment, education, security, and humanitarian affairs.

Gas-rich Qatar and Nigeria, both major global energy producers, have sought to strengthen economic ties in recent years, with discussions increasingly focusing on investment partnerships and aviation logistics.
