Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria is ramping up its digital identity infrastructure in a bid to bolster national security and streamline public services, according to the country’s identity management agency.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) announced it is driving major reforms to create a secure, unified digital ecosystem for Africa’s most populous nation.
A Mandatory Digital ID
Speaking at a digital conference in the capital, Abuja, NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote emphasized that the National Identification Number (NIN) has become the cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital transformation. Under a presidential directive issued last year, all government ministries, departments, and agencies are now mandated to use the NIN for:
Data capture and biometric authentication
Identity verification:
Accessing government and private sector digital services
Represented by the head of infrastructure technology, Sulaiman Falade, Coker-Odusote stated that the commission has established the necessary framework to ensure the strict enforcement of this directive.
Security and Transparency
The push for a robust Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) comes as Nigeria looks to tackle long-standing security challenges and improve transparency in governance.”Nigeria is strengthening trust in digital transactions, protecting citizens’ data, and promoting secure online interactions,” Coker-Odusote said, pointing to the deployment of a National Public Key Infrastructure (nPKI) to secure online data. The initiative aims to eliminate identity fraud and streamline access to social welfare programs, banking, and mobile network registrations.
Broad Collaboration Needed
While the government is leading the rollout, officials stress that the success of the system depends on widespread adoption. NIMC has called on both public and private sector stakeholders to integrate their systems with the national database to ensure a seamless, resilient digital economy. The reforms are part of a broader continental push, discussed at the Abuja summit under the theme “Building Africa’s Digital Foundations Together,” to bridge the digital divide and foster economic integration across Africa.
