PAIKO, Nigeria — The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has assured corps members that their safety remains the scheme’s “top priority” following a destructive rainstorm at the Niger State Orientation Camp.
General Nafiu traveled from Benue State to the Paiko-based camp on Friday to personally assess the damage to structures caused by the late-night storms. Addressing the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II corps members, the DG confirmed that emergency repairs were being initiated in collaboration with the Niger State government.
“Though luxury is not expected on orientation camps, minimum standards are required,” General Nafiu stated, promising that no corps member would be left stranded during the upgrade of the facilities.
Preparation for 2027 Polls
In a significant update regarding their service year, the Director-General disclosed that this current batch of corps members will be the first set to serve as ad hoc staff for the 2027 general elections.
He informed the 2,484 registered members that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would provide specialized training for the exercise. However, he issued a stern warning against political involvement:
- Neutrality: The NYSC remains a non-partisan body; corps members are strictly prohibited from participating in active politics.
- Conduct: Members were cautioned against thuggery and other electoral vices during their upcoming national assignment.
Skills and National Unity
Beyond security and elections, the DG used the visit to promote the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. He described SAED as an essential tool for livelihood, providing a source of income for those who may not find immediate formal employment after their service year.
He also reminded the youth that the scheme was intentionally designed to foster national cohesion across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious lines.
Camp Statistics
According to the NYSC Niger State Coordinator, Mrs. Martina Shuaibu Ibrahim, the camp currently hosts the following:
- 1,241 male corps members.
- 1,243 female corps members.
- Total: 2,484 members, including those originally deployed to the FCT but relocated to Niger for their orientation.
General Nafiu concluded by praising the discipline of the group, noting that despite the storm damage, no disparaging photos or posts had been shared on social media by the members.
