Nigeria’s mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the start dates for its latest induction phase, as thousands of graduates prepare to deploy across the country.
The 21-day “Orientation Course” for the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II is scheduled to take place simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. According to a statement released by the scheme’s management, the exercise will begin on Wednesday, 22 April, with the reception and registration of prospective corps members.
The NYSC, established in 1973 to promote national unity following the Nigerian Civil War, remains a rite of passage for Nigerian university and polytechnic graduates under the age of 30.
Travel Safety Warnings
In light of ongoing road safety and security concerns, the Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, issued a stern warning against the practice of “night journeys.”The NYSC management advised all graduates to ensure their travels are conducted during daylight hours.”Prospective Corps Members are advised to break their journeys once it’s 6:00pm,” the statement read. Graduates have been told to seek overnight shelter at designated “safe havens” if they are still in transit by dusk.
These include:Official NYSC lodges, military barracks or police stations and palaces of traditional rulers.
The three-week orientation serves as the first phase of the one-year service program, involving physical drills, lectures, and vocational training before participants are posted to their primary places of assignment in schools, hospitals, and government offices.
