Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Iran on Friday, as head coach Eric Chelle continues to reshape the three-time African champions for a new era.
In a high-intensity international friendly held in Antalya, Turkey, the Super Eagles struck early through Moses Simon, before a clinical finish from Akor Adams doubled their lead in the second half.
Despite a late surge from the Iranian side—led by a 67th-minute strike from Porto’s Mehdi Taremi—Nigeria’s defense held firm to claim a morale-boosting win.
A fast start in Turkey
Nigeria wasted no time imposing their will on the game. In the 7th minute, AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze carved through the Iranian midfield to find Simon, who finished composedly to put the West Africans ahead.
The lead was doubled seven minutes after the restart when Atletico Madrid’s Ademola Lookman turned provider, setting up Adams for his first significant international contribution of the year.
The match provided Coach Chelle with a vital opportunity to experiment with a “fluid front three,” as the team looks to move away from its historical over-reliance on a single target man.
The ‘World Cup’ void
While the victory will be welcomed by fans in Abuja and Lagos, it comes against a bittersweet backdrop. Nigeria will be absent from the upcoming World Cup in June, making this four-nation tournament in Turkey a “rebuilding exercise” rather than a final rehearsal.
For Chelle, who took the reins with a mandate to modernize the squad, these friendlies are about more than just results. With star striker Victor Osimhen currently sidelined and potentially requiring protective headgear upon his return, the emergence of Akor Adams as a reliable goal-scoring option is a significant development.
Analysis: A new identity?
The “Chelle era” is beginning to take shape with a clear emphasis on high-pressing and quick transitions. However, the lapse in concentration that allowed Taremi to pull a goal back for Iran suggests that Nigeria’s defensive organization remains a work in progress.
The Super Eagles will have little time to reflect on the win as they prepare to face Jordan on March 31 at the Mardan Stadium. That fixture will conclude their Turkish tour and provide a final look at the squad before the next round of competitive continental qualifiers.
