ABUJA, Nigeria — Barrister Ismaeel Ahmed, a prominent figure in the youth wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary of the Subcommittee on Programmes and Events for the party’s upcoming 2026 National Convention.
The appointment comes as Nigeria’s ruling party activates its planning machinery, signaling an early start to preparations for the internal elections that will shape the party’s leadership ahead of the next general election cycle.
A Heavyweight Committee
The committee’s leadership reflects the high stakes of the upcoming convention, drawing in some of the country’s most powerful political figures. It is chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, with George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, serving as Co-Chairman.
Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has been appointed as the committee’s Secretary, working alongside Mr Ahmed to coordinate the event’s logistics and programming.
Immediate Commencement
Following their inauguration on Wednesday, committee members reportedly began work immediately to design the framework for the event. The convention is expected to be a pivotal moment for the APC as it seeks to consolidate its structure and manage internal dynamics.
Observers say the inclusion of the heads of the legislature and the presidency’s top aides suggests the party is aiming for a tightly coordinated and disciplined event.
The subcommittee’s mandate includes the design and sequencing of all activities leading up to the national gathering, which serves as the supreme decision-making organ of the party.
