Arsenal produced a dominant second-half display to thrash Aston Villa 4-1 and ensure they head into the New Year at the top of the Premier League table.
Mikel Arteta’s side scored four goals after the interval at the Emirates Stadium to move five points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who face Sunderland on New Year’s Day.
The win provided sweet revenge for the Gunners, who had lost to Unai Emery’s side just over three weeks ago, and brought a clinical end to Villa’s impressive 11-match winning streak.
Second-half surge
After a frustrated first half, the deadlock was broken in the 48th minute when Gabriel Magalhaes, making his first start since returning from injury, bundled the ball home from a corner. Villa players appealed for a foul on goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, but the goal was allowed to stand.
The Gunners quickly seized control of the midfield, doubling their lead when captain Martin Odegaard intercepted a pass and threaded a ball through to Martin Zubimendi, who poked it past the onrushing Martinez.
The goals continued to flow as the game opened up:
- Leandro Trossard fired a low, powerful shot into the corner from the edge of the area—a goal upheld after a lengthy VAR check for offside.
- Substitute Gabriel Jesus added a stylish fourth, curling a strike into the net to the delight of the home crowd.
Villa’s frustration
Aston Villa had arrived in North London full of confidence following their recent run of form. Despite being without the suspended Matty Cash and Boubacar Kamara, they started brightly and nearly took the lead early through Ollie Watkins.
While Unai Emery’s side attempted to slow the tempo and frustrate the hosts, they ultimately crumbled under Arsenal’s high-intensity pressing in the second period. Ollie Watkins managed a late consolation goal, tapping in during stoppage time, but it did little to dampen the celebrations in North London.
A year to remember
The victory caps a remarkable calendar year for Arsenal, who have lost only twice in the league all season.
With a five-point cushion at the summit, the pressure now shifts to Manchester City. For Arteta, the performance was a statement of intent as his side looks to maintain their title charge into 2026.
