The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the immediate resumption of enforcement of its controversial Tinted Glass Permit policy, citing a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated using vehicles with unauthorised tinted windows. The police stated the decision follows a “careful review of emerging security concerns” and the need to proactively curb crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping, where tinted glass is used to conceal the identities of suspects. Full enforcement of the policy is set to begin on January 2, 2026.
A statement by Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer clarified that while it had previously suspended the enforcement to allow motorists time to regularise their documents, the action was not mandated by any court order, despite pending legal challenges. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun assured the public that the renewed enforcement will be executed with “utmost professionalism, respect for the rights of citizens, and in accordance with extant laws.” Motorists requiring the permit have been urged to apply through approved channels to ensure compliance, as the Force reaffirms its commitment to public safety and upholding the rule of law.
