Maiduguri, Nigeria
Police in Nigeria’s Borno State have successfully assisted a woman in recovering valuable gold ornaments she buried in the sand 15 years ago while fleeing an attack by the militant group Boko Haram.
The recovered items, which the woman hid in the remote Mallam Fatori area, are collectively valued at ₦23.6 million (approximately $29,000 USD).
A Return to a Volatile Area
The woman, a resident of Mallam Fatori, recently returned to her community—a region long destabilised by the extremist insurgency—and sought police assistance to retrieve the property she had hidden during her escape a decade and a half earlier.

In a statement released on Monday, the Borno State Police Command confirmed that officers from the Mallam Fatori Division located and successfully recovered the assets.
The unearthed property included 22 cc of gold valued at an estimated ₦20 million, along with a gold bracelet and chain worth ₦3.6 million.
Police Commended for Integrity
The State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, commended the Divisional Police Officer and his team for their “exemplary professionalism and integrity” in handling the recovery.

Command spokesman, ASP Nahum Daso, stated that the officers’ honesty reflected the core values of the Nigeria Police Force and worked to strengthen public confidence in law enforcement efforts across the state.
The Command has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of residents, particularly those returning to communities affected by years of conflict in the North-east.
