Abuja, Nigeria
Nigeria’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has issued a clarification, denying reports that it has suspended action on the Supreme Court-ordered delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency.
The Commission’s attention was drawn to a national newspaper report in which an INEC official was allegedly misquoted regarding the restructuring of wards across the Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West local government areas.
In a statement released on Monday, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, affirmed that the proposed delineation has not been suspended and that no final decision has yet been taken on the matter.
The delineation exercise is in compliance with a judgment delivered by the Supreme Court on 2nd December 2022.
INEC further confirmed that its ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise is proceeding normally across all local government areas within the Warri Federal Constituency.
The Commission concluded by appealing to “all the parties connected to the matter to continue to maintain the peace in the area.”
