Nigerian NGO Launches Campaign to Boost Voter Registration

ABUJA, Nigeria—A Nigerian non-governmental organisation, the Grassroots Center for Rights and Civic Orientation (GRACO), is launching a new initiative to encourage voter participation through digital literacy. In partnership with ByteOasis, GRACO will host its inaugural Civic Digital Skills Outreach on Saturday, September 13, 2025, to boost turnout for the country’s ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

The campaign aims to educate citizens on how to navigate the digital aspects of the CVR process, including online pre-registration and finding their nearest registration centres. The initiative is particularly timely as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has devolved voter registration to ward-level centres ahead of the October 18, 2025, deadline for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking about the initiative, GRACO’s Executive Director, Armsfree Ajanaku, highlighted the importance of reaching young voters. He explained that the event is being held at a football viewing centre to engage a key demographic. “We need them to understand that with the deadline set by INEC, those who intend to vote in the FCT Area Council elections must come out and get registered now,” he said.

Beyond voter registration, the outreach will also equip attendees with skills to combat misinformation online, including how to fact-check viral disinformation. This focus is particularly relevant for addressing factors that constrain the participation of women, with the session providing tips on online safety and gendered disinformation.

For those unable to attend in person, the event will be live-streamed on Instagram. GRACO’s effort reflects a broader commitment to citizens’ enlightenment and aims to create a more informed and engaged electorate.
