Tinubu questions opposition leaders’ credentials ahead of 2027 polls

UYO — President Bola Tinubu has launched a sharp political critique against opposition figures Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, questioning their leadership resolve and loyalty as the race for the 2027 general elections gathers momentum.

Speaking on Friday in Akwa Ibom State during a visit to commission projects executed by Governor Umo Eno, President Tinubu aimed at his key political rivals without directly naming them.

Referencing Mr Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State, the President contrasted his own record in public office with what he described as a failure to manage ecological disasters.

“One who said he is in one party they call NDC, who is running for president. He ran away from erosion. In Anambra State, he could not confront erosion,” President Tinubu told supporters at a political gathering. “I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I confronted the Atlantic Ocean. I claim it for you.”

Mr Obi governed Anambra between 2006 and 2014 before moving to the Labour Party in 2022 and subsequently joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in May 2026.

Questions over political loyalty

Turning to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar—who recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after departing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—President Tinubu questioned the consistency and character of opposition leadership.

“If a man that was, once upon a time, a baby of PDP, became a father of PDP. And because of a little inconvenience, he ran away from that party. And formed a dangerous ADC in another party. Is that a leadership trait?
