Do not lose faith in Nigeria, says federal character head on 66th Independence Anniversary

The head of Nigeria’s constitutional body responsible for ensuring regional balance in public appointments has urged citizens not to lose faith in the country, calling for renewed national unity and fair representation across all ethnic and political lines.

In an official message released in Abuja on Thursday, 1 October 2026, to mark the nation’s 66th Independence Anniversary, Honorable Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), said the milestone offers an opportunity to acknowledge both the country’s progress and its current difficulties.

Ms Omidiran emphasized that equitable representation across government institutions remains central to maintaining national cohesion in Africa’s most populous nation, where ethnic and regional divisions frequently shape public discourse.

Reaffirming the commission’s commitment to its constitutional mandate of preventing regional dominance in federal appointments, Ms. Omidiran noted that building an inclusive society requires the joint effort of both citizens and political leaders.
