The Nigerian Army has operationalized a new armored brigade, tank battalion, and artillery regiment in Kebbi State as part of efforts to curb banditry and bolster security across the country’s North-West region.
Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu formally inaugurated the 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi, alongside the 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri and the 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje. The operationalization is aimed at expanding military reach, strengthening command structures, and shortening response times to security threats in vulnerable rural communities.
Enhanced Firepower and Response TimesRepresenting the Army Chief, Major General Bemgba Koughna—General Officer Commanding 8 Division—directed the brigade’s acting commander, Colonel Abdullahi Umar, to leverage the new artillery and armored units to neutralize criminal groups operating in the state. Major General Koughna urged troops to observe strict rules of engagement and maintain professional conduct while protecting civilians.”Achieving lasting peace requires unwavering discipline, tactical focus, and seamless synergy among all security stakeholders,” Major General Koughna stated during the address.
Reassuring Local Communities
The military command also paid a condolence visit to residents of Jandutse, a community in Kebbi State that recently suffered a fatal attack by armed bandits.General Koughna reassured residents that the establishment of the surrounding military bases will ensure an increased troop presence and greater protection for local populations.
Community leaders welcomed the expanded deployment, citing ongoing concerns over security in the area.
