Defence chief calls for unity, support for military at Nigeria’s 66th independence service

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has called on citizens to remain steadfast, maintain faith in national unity, and rally behind the country’s armed forces as West Africa’s most populous nation marks its 66th independence anniversary.

General Musa made the appeal on Sunday during an inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in the capital, Abuja. The service, themed Anchored on Hope: The Path to Divine Stability and Shared Prosperity, formed a core component of the official national activities organized for the independence celebrations.

Delivering the first scripture reading during the service, the defence minister emphasized that national security serves as the indispensible foundation upon which economic growth and social cohesion are built. He assured the congregation and the wider public that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolutely committed to protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and restoring lasting peace across regions impacted by security challenges.

The commemorative service brought together a high-level delegation of state leaders, military commanders, and foreign diplomats. Prominent attendees included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, the country’s military service chiefs, and senior members of the clergy.

In his address to the congregation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio offered prayers for national healing and stability, urging political and religious leaders to foster harmony and work collectively toward sustainable peace across the country.

Delivering the official vote of thanks, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey, calling on citizens to preserve civic peace and institutional stability as the country prepares for its upcoming general elections in 2027.

The national inter-denominational service concluded with the ceremonial cutting of the official 66th Independence Anniversary cake, led by General Musa alongside legislative leaders and members of the executive cabinet.
