Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has insisted that only a “negotiated solution” can resolve the military conflict between the United States and Iran, following President Donald Trump’s public rejection of a proposal to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump described Tehran’s proposal as unacceptable, claiming Iran was eager for a deal to open the strait within seven days because “they’re losing so badly.” Trump added that the US already held “total control” of the vital maritime passage.
In response, Araghchi acknowledged the US president’s comments on Telegram but noted that Iran would await a “definitive” official response via regional mediators, describing Trump’s public statements as frequently contradictory.
The Strait of Hormuz—a crucial maritime bottleneck handling roughly 20 per cent of global oil and gas supplies—has remained effectively closed since the outbreak of hostilities in February, driving up global fuel prices.
