KANO, NIGERIA — Power has been restored to large parts of Kano State following the successful repair and re-energizing of a major transformer at the Kwanar Dangora Transmission Substation, grid operator Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed on Friday.
The 40MVA transformer was brought back online at 5:02 PM local time on Thursday, September 24, following an emergency replacement of a faulty 170kVA earthing transformer that had triggered a widespread regional outage.
Technical crews conducted extensive safety and system checks before re-energizing the unit, successfully resuming electricity supply across all affected 33kV distribution feeders.
The outage had disrupted commercial and residential electricity across several districts supplied by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC).
Kano, northern Nigeria’s largest economic hub, relies heavily on stable high-voltage transmission lines to support its industrial centers and agricultural processing networks.
In a statement released on Friday, TCN management acknowledged the disruption and expressed gratitude to affected residents and commercial consumers for their patience during the emergency repairs.”With the completion of replacement work and necessary technical checks, the 40MVA power transformer was successfully energised, restoring power supply to the affected 33kV feeders,” TCN stated, apologizing for the inconvenience caused by the shutdown.
The prompt repair is part of ongoing efforts by Nigerian electricity authorities to reinforce power transmission reliability across the nation’s bulk supply infrastructure.
