Large parts of Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, have been left without electricity following a technical failure at a major power substation early on Wednesday. The state-owned Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that a 100MVA transformer at the Apo 132/33kV substation tripped during the early hours of 9 September. Preliminary inspections revealed an oil spillage on the high-voltage bushing of the transformer’s “Red Phase”, forcing an immediate shutdown of the unit.
The incident has cut off supply to four key distribution lines—feeders H31, H33, H35, and H37—disrupting power to numerous residential and commercial customers served by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). Engineers and maintenance teams have been deployed to investigate the root cause of the fault and carry out the necessary repairs.
In a statement, TCN management expressed regret over the disruption and assured residents that technical crews are working to restore bulk electricity as quickly as possible.
