Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has inaugurated the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative Implementation Taskforce (NSCI-ITF) to accelerate the deployment of secure, localized cloud infrastructure across the country.
The move marks a transition from policymaking to direct execution of Nigeria’s sovereign cloud strategy, aiming to bolster national data security while driving private-sector tech investment.
Key Objectives and Operational Focus
The newly formed task force will serve as the central coordinating body for the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative (NSCI). Its core mandates include the following:
- Digital Sovereignty and Data Governance: Establishing robust regulatory standards to safeguard critical national digital assets and retain sensitive government and corporate data within domestic data centres.
- Regulatory Alignment: Harmonizing policies across existing government institutions to create a unified national baseline without overlapping statutory mandates.
- Investment Mobilization: Attracting private investment to scale local data-centre capacity and position Nigeria as a leading digital infrastructure hub in Africa.
- Indigenous Capacity: Expanding domestic technical expertise and supporting local technology providers to participate in the nation’s cloud ecosystem.
With the task force now active, NITDA stated that its focus shifts to institutional alignment, resolving execution bottlenecks, and delivering measurable digital infrastructure outcomes nationwide.
