PORT HARCOURT — Nigeria’s power grid operator has completed a major infrastructure upgrade in the country’s oil-rich Niger Delta region, boosting local supply capacity by 100%.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced on Thursday that it had successfully commissioned a new 150MVA power transformer at the Afam IV substation in Rivers State. The installation doubles the facility’s transformation capacity from 120MVA to 240MVA.

The upgrade allows TCN to transmit significantly more high-voltage electricity to the local distribution company, addressing persistent load bottlenecks in Port Harcourt, one of Nigeria’s primary industrial and commercial hubs.”The project has significantly enhanced TCN’s transmission capacity… enabling the DisCo to off-take more electricity for onward distribution to consumers in Port Harcourt metropolis and its environs,” TCN management said in a statement.The installation forms part of a broader, World Bank-backed national scheme aimed at modernising Nigeria’s aging power transmission grid and reducing frequent regional blackouts.
