Plateau’s senior lawyers pledge support to INEC chief ahead of polls

A delegation of senior lawyers from central Nigeria has pledged its full support to the country’s new electoral chief as the commission prepares for key upcoming elections.

The Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) resident in Plateau State paid a congratulatory visit to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Led by Pius A. Akubo, SAN, the delegation presented a congratulatory card to the new chairman, describing his appointment as a “historic milestone” for both the North-Central region and the wider nation.

Mr. Akubo added that the legal community was praying for guidance and protection for the new chairman as he takes the helm of the country’s sensitive electoral umpire.

Professional roots

Responding to the delegation, Prof. Amupitan expressed his gratitude, describing the Plateau-based senior lawyers as “family” and recalling his own deep professional roots within the state’s legal community.

He also paid tribute to the memory of late senior advocates from the state, describing their passing as a significant loss to the legal profession.

The INEC chairman shared the credit for the commission’s recent operations with his team, praising his National Commissioners, the Commission’s Secretary, Dr. (Mrs) Rose Orianran-Anthony, directors, and technical aides, whom he described as the “generals” behind the success of recent polls.

Eyes on the future

Looking forward, the chairman reiterated that the commission’s immediate focus is on managing the upcoming Osun State governorship election, alongside broader preparations for future nationwide votes.

Prof Amupitan urged the public, and particularly members of the legal profession, to continue supporting the commission as it works to deliver on its constitutional mandate.
