EU commits to supporting Nigeria’s democratic progress on Democracy Day

ABUJA — The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic evolution, describing democracy as a “daily duty” that thrives on institutional strength, civic participation, and peaceful dialogue.

In a statement marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, praised the resilience of the Nigerian people as they reflect on the country’s transition from military dictatorship to a developing democracy.

“Democracy is not a single moment. It is a movement,” Ambassador Mignot said. “Today, Nigeria marks Democracy Day, remembering the end of the dark days of dictatorship, a moment to reflect on the democratic journey and on the millions of Nigerians who continue to struggle to shape its future every single day.”

Despite facing numerous internal challenges, the ambassador noted that Nigeria’s democratic space continues to expand through reforms and increased inclusion, driven largely by local communities demanding accountability, young people redefining civic space, and women expanding representation in leadership.

Institutional Support and Reform

The EU highlighted its ongoing collaboration with key Nigerian institutions through the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme. The initiative focuses on strengthening partnerships, public dialogue, and broader engagement across the political landscape.

According to the statement, the EU is actively providing targeted support to Nigeria’s electoral umpire to improve institutional learning and the overall evolution of the country’s electoral processes.

Furthermore, the Union is working alongside the National Peace Committee to foster national cohesion and peaceful democratic dialogue before, during, and after elections. Efforts are also being directed toward legislative engagement and justice sector collaboration to strengthen the rule of law and public accountability.

Promoting Inclusion and Free Media

Ambassador Mignot emphasized that democracy remains strongest when more diverse voices are represented. To that end, the EU continues to back initiatives aimed at securing greater inclusion for women, young people, and persons with disabilities.

Addressing the rapidly changing digital environment, the ambassador stated that the EU is maintaining its support for independent media, civic information platforms, and verification networks. These partnerships aim to safeguard public discourse and improve the quality of public information.

The statement concluded by noting that through its Global Gateway Strategy, the EU will continue to invest in long-term partnerships designed to expand opportunities and support resilience for Nigeria’s next generation.

“Democracy is never finished, it must never be taken for granted,” Mignot said. “It must be protected, strengthened and renewed together.”
