DR Congo doctors strike over pay despite ongoing Ebola epidemic

Doctors in the Democratic Republic of Congo have launched a nationwide strike over pay and poor working conditions, despite the country battling a dangerous Ebola outbreak.

The main doctors’ union announced that the strike would begin on 11 June, accusing the government of failing to offer concrete solutions to their demands for better salaries and systemic funding increases for the health sector.

The industrial action places additional strain on a fragile health system already under severe pressure from multiple public health crises.

Union leaders confirmed that while the strike will affect public hospitals across the country, emergency services will remain open to care for the most vulnerable patients.

The Congolese government says it is continuing negotiations with union representatives in an effort to end the dispute and prevent a prolonged disruption to healthcare services.
