KATSINA, Nigeria — A former senior political aide in northern Nigeria, who was recently paraded by police over his alleged involvement in a child-kidnapping syndicate, had already been suspended from office following a corruption inquiry, the state government has confirmed.
Nura Aliyu Garwa, a former Senior Special Assistant on Community Development to the Katsina State Governor, is facing intense police interrogation over the abduction of an eight-year-old boy from the upscale Sardauna Estate in Katsina metropolis.
In a formal statement released on Sunday, the Katsina State Commissioner of Information and Culture, Salisu Zango, clarified that the administration had distanced itself from the suspect long before his recent arrest by the police command.
A History of Suspensions
The government’s involvement seeks to clarify Mr. Garwa’s position within the ruling administration. According to state officials, the suspect had been placed on indefinite suspension from his gubernatorial advisory role after an internal investigation linked him to the theft and diversion of community empowerment materials. The relief items were originally earmarked for impoverished rural communities in the Batsari Local Government Area under the state’s flagship Community Development Programme.
Following his quiet removal from the governor’s inner circle, Mr Garwa launched a political bid to reinvent himself, contesting for a legislative seat in the Katsina State House of Assembly to represent the same Batsari constituency.
The Kidnap Syndicate
The political trajectory of the former aide imploded last week when detectives from the Katsina State Police Command paraded him alongside several other suspected gang members.
Police intelligence alleges that Mr Garwa acted as the mastermind behind a highly organised kidnapping cell operating within the state capital. The syndicate’s operations came to light after the high-profile abduction of a minor in the metropolis, triggering a coordinated counter-adversary sweep by state security forces.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the unfolding scandal as “unfortunate,” expressing deep concern that a high-profile individual who had aspired to lawmakers’ status could be linked to such violent, cross-border criminality.
Call for Vigilance
Governor Radda praised the frontline tactics of the state police command and sister security agencies for their commitment to dismantling the network before it could scale operations.
He urged the public to remain resilient and actively support ongoing counter-banditry operations by feeding timely intelligence to security formations.
The arrest comes amidst a broader, highly aggressive campaign by law enforcement agencies in northwest Nigeria to sever the logistical and financial lifelines connecting urban political actors with rural bandit syndicates.
