Road safety officials in Gombe have foiled an attempted vehicle fraud and recovered a car suspected to have been stolen five years ago during a routine administration check. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) intercepted the vehicle at its National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) office on 16 April 2026, when an applicant attempted to revalidate the car’s number plates.
The recovery was made possible after eagle-eyed officials noticed discrepancies in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) within the submitted paperwork. A physical inspection confirmed that the documents did not match the chassis engraving on the vehicle. By using the NVIS database, the FRSC was able to contact the original registered owner, Cecilia Duru, who confirmed the car had been stolen in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, back in 2021.
While the person currently in possession of the car claimed to have bought it from a third party, the vehicle has been impounded to prevent it from disappearing.
Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri said the operation highlights the growing intelligence capacity of the corps to combat vehicle-related crime. The FRSC has now urged the public to use official verification platforms before buying used vehicles to avoid falling victim to similar fraudulent schemes.
