Kogi Student Leaders Mobilise Support for Tinubu and Ododo Re-election

LOKOJA, Nigeria — A coalition of major student union bodies in Kogi State has announced plans to mobilise support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ahmed Ododo.

The move was discussed during a high-level meeting at the Government House in Lokoja between the state government and representatives from several influential student organisations. The groups, operating under the banner of the “Kogi Student Support Group for PBAT/Ododo,” cited improvements in educational infrastructure and student welfare as the primary reasons for their endorsement.

Performance-Led Support

The student leaders argued that the current administrations at both the federal and state levels have demonstrated a clear commitment to the education sector. Key areas of praise included the upgrading of campus facilities and the improved welfare of academic staff, which they say has contributed to a more stable learning environment.

Oladele Nihi, the Special Adviser to the Kogi State Governor on Youth and Student Matters, who hosted the delegation, expressed the government’s gratitude for the endorsement.

“On behalf of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, I thanked them for their support,” Mr. Nihi said in a statement. “We encouraged them to continue championing good conduct and academic excellence across their various campuses.”

A Broad Coalition

The meeting reflected a broad spectrum of the student population, with leaders from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS) in attendance.

Regional and demographic organisations were also represented, including the Association of Nigeria Female Students (ANFS), as well as the Igala, Ebira, and Okun student associations.

While student groups in Nigeria have historically been a potent force for political activism, this early mobilisation suggests a strategic push by the ruling party to secure the youth vote in Kogi State ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The state government has pledged to continue its dialogue with student bodies to ensure that the concerns of young people remain central to the legislative agenda.
