Anthony Joshua: Family ‘eager’ to see boxer as crash investigation continues

The family of Anthony Joshua say they are “anxious” to see the former world heavyweight champion as he recovers in a Lagos hospital following a fatal car crash.

Speaking from the family home in Sagamu, south-west Nigeria, the boxer’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, described the news as a “rude shock” and expressed the family’s frustration at being unable to visit him due to strict security and medical protocols.

The crash, which occurred on Monday on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, claimed the lives of two of Mr Joshua’s close friends and team members, both UK residents.

A festive visit turned to tragedy

Anthony Joshua, 36, traditionally returns to his ancestral home in Sagamu several times a year to celebrate the festive season with relatives.

“We are all eager to see him, even if only three of us are allowed,” his uncle told reporters. “We understand the need to protect him given his global status, but this was completely unexpected. It is usually a time to rejoice.”

The family confirmed they are in contact with the boxer’s parents, who are also currently in Nigeria, but they have yet to be granted access to the undisclosed medical facility where he is being treated for stable but “emotional” injuries.

‘Excessive speed’ suspected

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) provided further details on the collision on Tuesday, identifying the vehicle as a black Lexus SUV.

Spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide said that while technical investigations are ongoing, the sheer force of the impact with a stationary truck suggested the car was travelling well above the speed limit.

“When you look at the impact of that crash, it is clear that the vehicle was likely exceeding the limit,” Mr Ogungbemide said. “Trained officers can infer speed from the damage and force involved.”

Political outcry over road safety

The tragedy has reignited a fierce debate over the safety of Nigeria’s highways. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan described the incident as “heart-wrenching and unacceptable,” calling on the federal government to establish better emergency rescue systems and rest stations for long-distance drivers.

Messages of support have continued to pour in:

  • Oladipupo Adebutu (PDP): Described Joshua as a “symbol of courage” and a source of national pride.
  • Sagamu Youth Association: Offered prayers for a “swift recovery” for their local hero.
  • President Bola Tinubu: Has remained in contact with the family, urging unity and strength during what he termed a “difficult moment” for the nation.

British officials monitor recovery

Two British citizens—Ayodele Kelvin Olu and Gami Sina—died in the accident. Their bodies are expected to be repatriated following the conclusion of initial police enquiries.

British diplomatic staff and high-ranking Nigerian officials, including the governors of Lagos and Ogun states, remain closely involved in the case.
