Washington D.C.
US authorities have discovered more than a million additional documents linked to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which they intend to make public in the coming weeks. The Department of Justice (DoJ) announced the find on Wednesday, stating that the FBI and federal prosecutors in New York are currently reviewing the massive trove.
The announcement comes as the DoJ faces intense scrutiny for missing a 19 December deadline—mandated by a new federal law—to release all files related to the Epstein investigations. Officials say the newly discovered material is being processed “around the clock” to ensure that the identities of victims are protected before the files are cleared for public viewing.
Under Pressure: The Push for Transparency
The DoJ stated it would “continue to fully comply with federal law and President Trump’s direction to release the files,” though it cautioned that the sheer volume of material means it could take “a few more weeks” before the full cache is available.
Key details of the discovery include:
- Scale: Over one million documents, adding to the hundreds of thousands already released.
- Origin: The files were identified by the FBI and the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY).
- Legal Shield: Lawyers are currently performing “legally required redactions” to safeguard the privacy and safety of Epstein’s victims.
Context: The Epstein Case
Jeffrey Epstein was a wealthy financier who was facing federal charges of sex trafficking minors in New York when he died by suicide in his prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial.
Since his death, there has been a global demand for transparency regarding his high-profile associates and the extent of his criminal network. While thousands of pages have been released in recent batches, many remain heavily redacted, leading to accusations from transparency advocates that the government is still “slow-walking” the most sensitive information.
