EU Pledges €250,000 in Humanitarian Aid for Displaced Nigerians

Abuja, Nigeria – The European Union is providing an additional €250,000 (over N450 million) in humanitarian assistance to Nigeria to help people displaced by violent attacks in Benue and Plateau states.

The funding will be given to the Nigerian Red Cross, which will use it to provide emergency support to 2,500 vulnerable households—approximately 15,000 people. The assistance will include cash, household items, healthcare, and psychological support, as well as water and sanitation services.

The initiative also aims to strengthen protection services and raise awareness about health, hygiene, and safety, with a focus on helping women and children who have been repeatedly displaced and are now living in precarious conditions.

The humanitarian situation in the two states is severe, with more than 615,000 people displaced in Benue and another 65,000 in Plateau as of July 2025. Many of these individuals are farmers who have been cut off from their land during the planting season.

This new funding is part of the EU’s larger contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund. The EU had previously provided €500,000 to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in July to assist displaced populations in Benue state.
