Nigeria, Brazil to Strengthen Cultural Ties through Diaspora Project

Brasília, Brazil – The Nigerian government is strengthening its cultural ties with Brazil, with a focus on reconnecting the African diaspora to their ancestral homeland. This was the focus of a recent event in Brasília that brought together Nigerian and Brazilian officials.

The event, which was part of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil, featured prominent Nigerian figures including Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Yemi Cardoso.

Speaking at the event, Dabiri-Erewa praised both the Nigerian and Brazilian presidents for their commitment to fostering cultural exchanges. She highlighted the upcoming “Door of Return Festival” in Lagos, which is scheduled for October 18, describing it as a “symbolic gateway connecting the diaspora back to their motherland—historically, spiritually, economically.”

Professor Soyinka spoke on his “Return to Africa” project, calling it “a symbolic return” focused on spiritually reconnecting with African heritage and celebrating the resilience of the African people.

Yemi Cardoso, who identifies as an Afro-Brazilian descendant, emphasized the importance of new direct flights between Nigeria and Brazil, calling them a “game changer” for business and cultural exchanges.
