GAZA CITY, GAZA – The Israeli military has begun the initial stages of a planned ground offensive in Gaza City, prompting Palestinians to flee parts of the area. After days of intense bombing and artillery fire, troops have established a foothold on the outskirts of the city, home to more than a million people.
The offensive, which has faced international condemnation, aims to capture and occupy the entire city. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has renewed his calls for an immediate ceasefire to “avoid the death and destruction” the assault would “inevitably cause.”
Israel is pressing ahead with its plan despite criticism from allies, including French President Emmanuel Macron, who warned the move could lead to “disaster” and “a cycle of permanent war.”
According to a military spokesman, troops are operating in the Zeitoun and Jabalia areas to lay the groundwork for the offensive. Additionally, about 60,000 reservists are being called up to support the operation. The Israeli government’s plan to conquer the entire Gaza Strip follows a recent breakdown in ceasefire talks with Hamas.
