The Nigerian government has launched the seventh phase of mass trials for suspected terrorists at the Kainji detention facility, reaffirming its commitment to combating terrorism and strengthening its criminal justice system.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Wednesday, Major General Adamu Garba Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), emphasised that the trials underscore Nigeria’s dedication to justice and its resolve to address terrorism through lawful and transparent processes.

“It is truly encouraging to see the convergence of the Judiciary, law enforcement, legal practitioners, and partners, once again united in purpose and duty,” General Laka stated. “These trials are a cornerstone of our national commitment to upholding the rule of law while addressing terrorism and violent extremism.”

General Laka highlighted significant progress in Nigeria’s capacity to prosecute terrorism-related offences, noting that these advancements have been crucial in addressing concerns raised by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). He added that the trials have “greatly contributed to Nigeria’s efforts toward exiting the FATF Grey List.”

On behalf of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, General Laka extended appreciation to various government bodies and international partners for their professionalism and support.

Representing the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar, also commended the collaborative efforts of ONSA and other stakeholders. He reiterated the federal government’s commitment to ensuring justice for both victims and accused persons, strictly within the framework of the rule of law and human rights.
