Nigerian Embassy in Tehran Denies Abandoning Citizens Amidst Regional TensionsAbuja, Nigeria

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly refuted claims circulating on social media and certain news outlets that its embassy in Tehran, Iran, has been abandoned and staff have left the country due to the ongoing crisis with Israel. In a statement released on Friday, June 21, 2025, the Ministry categorically denied the allegations, assuring Nigerian nationals in Iran that the embassy remains operational and dedicated to their welfare and safety. However, the Ministry acknowledged that “consistent bombing in Tehran has… disrupted normal work schedules and forced staff to work remotely.” This admission comes amidst heightened regional tensions, although specific details regarding the bombing incidents were not provided in the press release. Addressing concerns about the safety of its citizens, the Nigerian Embassy is reportedly “actively engaging with the Government of Armenia to grant access for the evacuation of Nigerians via Yerevan.” This suggests a potential contingency plan for Nigerians wishing to leave Iran.

Nigerian citizens in Iran who require assistance are being encouraged to contact the embassy directly through a set of emergency phone numbers and email addresses. These include Mr. Esson Anzaku (+989393216872) and Abutalib (+989024199018), along with the emails Nigeria.tehran@mfa.gov.ng, anzakuesson02@gmail.com, and lawshed@yahoo.com.Furthermore, the Ministry advised Nigerians in Iran to reach out to designated coordinators within the Nigerian Community in various locations.

They have also been urged to download the Iranian local messaging app, Eitaa, and join the Nigerian group for regular updates from the embassy.Signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the statement concluded by reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to “remain vigilant in monitoring the situation and will continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard the interests of Nigerians worldwide.”

The situation in the Middle East has been volatile, with ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel escalating in recent months.

The Nigerian government’s statement aims to quell fears among its diaspora and provide clarity on its diplomatic presence in the region.
