Gaza Strikes Resume as Ceasefire Ends

Israeli air strikes have resumed in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of more than 400 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The Israeli military states it is targeting “terror targets” across the territory, following the collapse of ceasefire negotiations. This latest wave of strikes is reported to be the most intense since the start of the ceasefire on 19 January.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declared Israel will “act against Hamas with increasing military strength”, accusing the group of “repeated refusal to release our hostages” and rejecting proposals to extend the truce.

Hamas, in turn, has accused Israel of attacking “defenceless civilians” and called on mediators to hold Israel “fully responsible” for “violating and overturning” the ceasefire.

Israel reports that 59 hostages remain in Gaza, with up to 24 believed to be alive. A representative group of hostage families has accused the Israeli government of “choosing to give up the hostages” by launching the renewed strikes.
