The US government has announced it will investigate how past aid allocated to Nigeria, and other countries, has been used. This follows a 90-day suspension of all foreign aid, announced by the US President on 20 January, citing concerns about global instability and the need to better align aid with US interests.
The US Mission in Nigeria, in a post on X, formerly Twitter, confirmed it is tracking previous US assistance. “Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that US assistance reaches intended recipients,” the mission stated.
The US has also condemned the ongoing violence caused by Boko Haram. “The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” the mission said.
The statement reiterated that Boko Haram was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organisation by the US Secretary of State in 2013, a move designed to block the group’s assets, restrict fundraising, prosecute members and prevent travel to the US.
The US government reaffirmed its commitment to working with Nigeria and regional partners to counter terrorism and improve security in West Africa.
