Former US President Barack Obama has voiced disappointment over Donald Trump’s election win, emphasizing the significance of a peaceful transfer of power. Obama’s remarks come after Trump’s surprise victory, which marks a stark contrast to his refusal to concede defeat to Joe Biden four years ago – an incident that led to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack by Trump supporters.
In a statement, Obama acknowledged, “This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for. But living in a democracy is about recognising that our point of view won’t always win out and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power.”
Obama also commended Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, who lost the election, describing them as “two extraordinary public servants who ran a remarkable campaign.”
This development comes as world leaders congratulate President-elect Trump, who has vowed to tackle illegal immigration. President Biden is expected to address Americans soon.
