Outgoing Third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has urged regional lawmakers to bring parliamentary activities closer to the citizens they represent across West Africa.
Speaking during a formal handover ceremony at the Second Extraordinary Session and Seminar in Accra, Ghana, the Ghanaian lawmaker handed over his parliamentary seat to George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, MP for Cape Coast South, following the completion of his tenure.
Afenyo-Markin stated that regional integration must move beyond treaties, policy protocols, and formal institutional meetings to deliver practical benefits for ordinary citizens, particularly through youth employment and cross-border trade.
Reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted the parliament’s strategy of hosting sessions outside traditional capital cities—including Winneba in Ghana, as well as Kano and Port Harcourt in Nigeria—to directly engage local communities, traditional leaders, and academic institutions.
