World Cup 2026: Harry Kane rescues England from the brink of historic humiliation

As Harry Kane raced towards the corner of Atlanta’s futuristic stadium, England head coach Thomas Tuchel followed him onto the pitch, consumed by sheer relief.

Kane—captain, talisman, and undisputed world-class operator—had just rescued a World Cup campaign that was threatening to end in one of the most catastrophic humiliations in English football history.

Beneath the closed roof, shielded from Atlanta’s searing heat and stifling humidity, England were withering away. Tuchel’s tenure was flashing before his eyes as they trailed a relentless DR Congo side until a player who stands as one of his country’s all-time greats single-handedly revived them.

Make no mistake, England were heading for an embarrassment on the scale of the Euro 2016 exit to Iceland or the infamous 1950 World Cup defeat by the United States. Then Kane, as he has so often done, took control.

The striker’s record-breaking career has been littered with moments of brilliance, but few will match what he produced here in a gripping last-32 tie that England ultimately sneaked 2-1.

With only 15 minutes remaining and the giant stadium clock seemingly ticking at double speed, Kane rose to power a header past Lionel Mpasi—the DR Congo goalkeeper who had stood as a formidable barrier with a series of outstanding saves.

A moment of pure greatness

Then, with four minutes left, Kane did what the true greats do.

He produced a flash of genius to book England’s place in the last 16 and a date in the cauldron of Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium, where they will face co-hosts Mexico.

Receiving a pass from Anthony Gordon—who made a superb impact off the bench and was involved in both goals—Kane shifted the ball away from a DR Congo defender before unleashing a stunning right-foot strike high past Mpasi, who barely had time to react.

It was a cruel finish for a courageous DR Congo side, but for England and Tuchel, it was the ultimate get-out-of-jail card.
