Caicedo a doubt for Chelsea ahead of Arsenal clash

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso says a final decision on Moises Caicedo’s fitness will be made on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Ecuadorian midfielder, who missed the opening two matches of the season, suffered a setback just 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute against Brighton last weekend.

Speaking on Friday, Alonso confirmed that the club would assess the player during their final training session before naming the matchday squad.

“We will check tomorrow. Tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,” Alonso said. “These things can happen and we need to check.”

Injury concerns for both sides

Caicedo’s potential absence comes as Alonso prepares for his first meeting with Arsenal since taking charge at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is managing his own injury concerns ahead of the fixture:

  • William Saliba remains sidelined, with Arteta unable to give a timeline for the defender’s return.
  • Bruno and Cristhian Mosquera are being assessed following recent knocks.
  • Jurrien Timber has returned to full training and is in contention, while Ezri Konsa is available.

Emegha nearing debut

Alonso also offered an encouraging update on summer signing Emmanuel Emegha, who is yet to make his competitive debut following a pre-season injury.

The Dutch striker joined Chelsea from Strasbourg and is being eased back into first-team action.

“When he has space he is a big threat,” Alonso said. “He’s young, and he has very special qualities… players that are young and come here need to be patient, but knowing that for sure they will have their opportunity.”

Sunday’s derby will also see childhood friends Alonso and Arteta face each other from opposite dugouts for the first time in the Premier League.
