ENUGU, Nigeria — The Enugu State Government has strongly dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that innocent residents were attacked in the Awgu Local Government Area of the state.
In an official statement released on Monday, 1 June 2026, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, stated categorically that no such incident took place in Awgu or any other part of the state.
Dr. Agbo described the viral reports as entirely false and malicious, alleging that they were deliberately fabricated by individuals seeking to misinform the public and trigger widespread panic.
“We wish to state unequivocally that no such incident occurred,” the commissioner stated. “The report is fake, baseless, and exists only in the imagination of those peddling it.”
‘A Desperate Attempt to Score Political Points’
The state government indicated that life across the region remains entirely normal, with residents going about their daily business without any disruptions or security breaches of the nature described online.
The commissioner suggested that the false reports were politically motivated, designed to undermine the current administration’s security credentials and disrupt the state’s hard-earned reputation as a peaceful destination.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals, apparently uncomfortable with the prevailing peace, security, and stability in Enugu State, would resort to fabricating falsehoods,” Dr. Agbo said. “They engage in falsehood in a desperate attempt to score cheap political points at the expense of Ndi Enugu.”
Crackdown on Fake News
The Enugu State Government reiterated that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah has made regional security its top priority, investing heavily in state-wide surveillance, community policing, and tactical deployment frameworks to protect lives and property.
Warning those behind the online rumours, the commissioner stressed that the state will take a zero-tolerance approach toward digital misinformation.
- Legal Action: Anyone found to be involved in the deliberate creation, amplification, or dissemination of fake news will face immediate prosecution under extant laws.
- Public Vigilance: Citizens are strongly urged to verify all security-related information through official state channels rather than unverified social media feeds.
- Community Peace: The public has been advised to remain calm and avoid sharing provocative content capable of causing unnecessary fear and confusion.
The government reaffirmed its total commitment to maintaining public order, assuring residents and visitors alike that security forces remain fully deployed to guarantee safety across all local government areas.
